How should you manage your sleep before a flight?
Uçuş öncesi uykunuzu nasıl düzenlemelisiniz?
Plan sleep so you report rested, ideally waking a few hours before duty, as you would before a normal working day. Protect enough sleep in the hours before report time, even when the schedule works against your body clock.
If you report for duty and realise you are too fatigued to operate safely, what do you do?
What causes fatigue in pilots?
Pilotlarda yorgunluğa (fatigue) ne neden olur?
Fatigue comes mainly from too little or poor-quality sleep and from heavy workload or stress, made worse by circadian disruption and long or irregular duty periods.
Why is circadian disruption so harmful even when you get enough total hours of sleep?
What effects does fatigue have on a pilot?
Yorgunluğun pilot üzerindeki etkileri nelerdir?
Fatigue slows reaction time, degrades judgement and decision-making, and raises the chance of human error, together with poorer attention, memory and communication.
How would you recognise fatigue in your colleague, and what can the crew do about it in flight?
Define hypoxia.
Hipoksiyi tanımlayınız.
Hypoxia is a condition in which the body's tissues, especially the brain, receive less oxygen than they need to function properly. In flight it is mainly caused by the lower partial pressure of oxygen at altitude.
What are the four types of hypoxia, and which one does carbon monoxide cause?
Dört hipoksi türü nedir ve karbon monoksit hangisine neden olur?
What causes hypoxia in flight, and what makes someone more susceptible?
Altitude. As pressure falls, so does the partial pressure of oxygen, and less oxygen crosses into the blood. Time at altitude, exertion, illness, fatigue, alcohol or drugs, smoking and cold make it worse.
Why does breathing 100% oxygen protect you only up to a certain altitude?
What is the time of useful consciousness at various altitudes?
Çeşitli irtifalarda faydalı bilinç süresi (TUC) nedir?
Approximate TUC: FL180 about 20-30 min; FL250 about 3-5 min; FL300 about 1-2 min; FL350 about 30-60 s; FL400 about 15-20 s; FL450 and above about 9-15 s. After a rapid decompression, these times can roughly halve.
Why is the time of useful consciousness much shorter after a rapid decompression?
What are the signs and symptoms of hypoxia?
Hipoksinin belirti ve semptomları nelerdir?
Typical signs: cyanosis (blue lips and nails), personality change or euphoria, impaired judgement, poor coordination and muscle control, memory loss, reduced vision and other senses, faster breathing, then loss of consciousness.
Why is hypoxia so dangerous even though it has recognisable symptoms?
How is hypoxia treated?
Hipoksi nasıl tedavi edilir?
Restore oxygen at once: crew put on 100% oxygen masks. If cabin altitude is high, descend to 10,000 ft or to the minimum safe altitude if that is higher. Pilots must know their oxygen and decompression drills whenever hypoxia is possible.
Why is the first action on a cabin-altitude warning to don masks, before diagnosing the problem?
Kabin irtifası uyarısında neden ilk eylem, sorunu teşhis etmeden önce maskeleri takmaktır?
What is hyperventilation?
Hiperventilasyon nedir?
Hyperventilation is breathing faster or deeper than the body needs, which washes out too much carbon dioxide. The blood becomes alkaline (respiratory alkalosis), producing symptoms that look like hypoxia.
Why does losing CO2 cause symptoms, when CO2 is a waste product?
What can cause hyperventilation?
Hiperventilasyona ne neden olabilir?
Hypoxia, anxiety or stress, motion sickness, vibration, heat, high g-loads, pain and similar stressors that drive breathing beyond the body's needs.
How can hypoxia and hyperventilation feed each other in flight?
Hipoksi ve hiperventilasyon uçuşta birbirini nasıl besleyebilir?
What are the symptoms of hyperventilation?
Hiperventilasyonun semptomları nelerdir?
Dizziness or light-headedness, tingling in the hands and around the lips, visual disturbance, hot or cold feelings, anxiety, muscle spasms, sharply reduced performance and eventually unconsciousness. These closely resemble hypoxia.
Which symptoms help you tell hyperventilation from hypoxia, and does it change what you do at altitude?
How do you treat hyperventilation?
Hiperventilasyonu nasıl tedavi edersiniz?
Above about 10,000 ft, assume hypoxia and give oxygen first. Below that, slow and control the breathing rate and depth, for example by talking the person down to calm, slow breathing, and remove the cause.
Why does slowing the breathing work, and why is a paper bag not recommended in flight?
Nefesi yavaşlatmak neden işe yarar ve uçuşta kağıt torba neden önerilmez?
Which exhaust gas is the biggest personal safety threat to pilots, and why?
Carbon monoxide (CO). In piston aircraft whose cabin heat comes from a shroud around the exhaust, a leak can let this odourless gas into the cabin, causing headache, impaired judgement and eventually unconsciousness.
Why does even a small concentration of CO cause such serious impairment?
What is carbon monoxide poisoning?
Karbonmonoksit zehirlenmesi nedir?
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless toxic gas that grabs haemoglobin's oxygen-carrying sites far more strongly than oxygen does. The blood then delivers too little oxygen to the brain and body, even though the air itself contains normal oxygen.
Why does CO poisoning make you more vulnerable to hypoxia at altitude?
CO zehirlenmesi sizi irtifada hipoksiye karşı neden daha savunmasız kılar?
Where does carbon monoxide in the cockpit come from?
Kokpitteki karbonmonoksit nereden gelir?
It forms during combustion of fuel in the engine, especially incomplete combustion in piston engines. It reaches the cockpit through exhaust leaks, typically via a cabin heater that warms air around the exhaust manifold.
What can you do on the ground to reduce the risk of CO entering the cabin?
How can you tell carbon monoxide is present?
Karbonmonoksit varlığını nasıl anlarsınız?
You usually cannot sense it, because it is odourless and invisible. Detection relies on CO detectors (colour-change cards or electronic alarms) and on recognising symptoms. Cherry-red skin is a late sign of prolonged exposure.
Why is cherry-red skin a poor warning sign?
Kiraz kırmızısı cilt neden zayıf bir uyarı işaretidir?
What are the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning?
Karbonmonoksit zehirlenmesinin semptomları nelerdir?
Headache, dizziness, nausea, breathing changes or breathlessness, blurred or reduced vision, impaired judgement, drowsiness, and finally loss of consciousness.
In a piston aircraft, what combination should make you suspect CO rather than ordinary fatigue?
Pistonlu bir uçakta hangi kombinasyon sıradan yorgunluk yerine CO'dan şüphelenmenize neden olmalıdır?
What should you do if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning?
Karbonmonoksit zehirlenmesinden şüphelenirseniz ne yapmalısınız?
Turn the cabin heat off, stop any smoking, open fresh-air vents or windows, put on oxygen if available, then land as soon as practicable and seek medical attention.
Why seek medical attention even if the symptoms go away after landing?
İnişten sonra semptomlar geçse bile neden tıbbi yardım almalısınız?
What is the whiteout or whitening illusion?
Whiteout (beyazlama) illüzyonu nedir?
In a uniform white environment with no contrast, depth and distance perception fail. The pilot cannot judge height or distance to a white surface and may believe it is further away than it is.
How would you fly an approach or landing in whiteout conditions?
What is empty field myopia?
Boş alan miyopisi (empty field myopia) nedir?
When there is nothing to focus on, such as in cloud, haze, darkness or empty sky, the eyes relax to a near focus of about 1-2 m. Distant objects such as other aircraft are then missed.
What technique counters empty field myopia during lookout?
Dışarıyı gözlerken empty field myopia'ya karşı hangi teknik kullanılır?
What is the black hole illusion on approach?
Yaklaşmadaki kara delik (black hole) illüzyonu nedir?
On a night approach over dark, featureless terrain or water with only the runway lights visible, pilots tend to feel higher than they are. They fly a dangerously low, shallow approach and risk landing short or hitting terrain.
What defences do you use against the black hole illusion?
Black hole yanılsamasına karşı hangi savunmaları kullanırsınız?
How does night time affect visual perception during flight and landing?
Gece, uçuş ve iniş sırasında görsel algıyı nasıl etkiler?
At night, empty field myopia affects lookout in cruise, and black-hole-type illusions affect the approach. The pilot feels higher, judging the runway as further below than it really is, and tends to fly low and land short.
How do runway slope and width add to these illusions?
How long must you wait to fly after scuba diving, and why?
Commonly: at least 12 hours after a no-decompression dive, and 24 hours after dives needing decompression stops or repeated dives. Some operators require 24-48 hours. The aim is to avoid decompression sickness when cabin pressure falls.
Why is this still a risk in a pressurised cabin?
What is the risky shift phenomenon?
Risky shift (riskli kayma) olgusu nedir?
Risky shift means that a group discussing a decision often ends up choosing a bolder, more hazardous option than most of its members would pick if each decided alone.
How can a crew guard against risky shift in a decision such as pressing on into bad weather?
Are people more likely to take risks alone or in a group?
In a group. Shared responsibility and confidence in others' judgement mean groups tend to accept more risk than individuals would. This is the risky shift effect.
How does the authority gradient on a two-pilot flight deck affect this tendency?
İki pilotlu kokpitteki otorite gradyanı (authority gradient) bu eğilimi nasıl etkiler?
How long should you wait after drinking alcohol before you fly?
Meet the legal minimum, for example 8 hours under FAA rules, and stay below the alcohol limit (EASA 0.2 g/L blood, FAA 0.04% BAC). You also need to be free of any after-effects. After heavy drinking, 24 hours or more may be needed, and many airlines set longer limits.
Why is meeting the minimum hours after drinking not necessarily enough?
İçki içtikten sonra minimum saat şartını karşılamak neden yeterli olmayabilir?
